Food safety, environment and genetics research group. MATIS ltd. is an Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D institute founded in 2007 following the merger of three former public food research institutes. MATIS multidimensional fields include environmental research, genetics, food research, microbiological & chemical analysis, quality and safety of aquatic and marine catches, biotechnology, fisheries research, fisheries management, traceability, markets, processing technology, chemical and physical properties of food and feed, aquaculture, and consulting. MATIS has emphasized on building up top facilities at its laboratories, performing cutting edge research in close collaboration with various universities, institutes and industry in Iceland and worldwide. Matis is located in 9 places around Iceland with about 100 employees and its headquarters in Reykjavík. Matis total turnover in 2010 was EUR 7.68 million working capital, thereof the annual research income was 6,8 € million of which 12.1 % was derived from EU and Nordic awards.

Role of Matis in MaCuMBA:

MATIS’ tasks in the MaCuMBA project are: i) to perform in situ enrichments in coastal hydrothermal vents and to collect natural samples from various marine extreme environments and in the open sea (WP2) ii) to develop new culture techniques for enriching and isolation of uncultured microorganisms with expected biotechnological potential (WP2,WP3) iii) to use new rational culture methods by mimicking nature (temperature, light, substrate and salinity fluctuations, co-culturing) in the laboratory and use metagenomics and cell sorting for discovering efficient and controlled culture methods for further exploitation (WP2, WP3, WP6) and iv) to increase biomass production and preserve new isolates (WP3, WP4).

 

Profile of staff engaged in the project:

Viggo Thor Marteinsson

Dr. Viggo Thór Marteinsson has a PhD in marine microbiology from Université de Bretagne Occidentale, France. He has a strong background in microbial ecology, phylogeny, biotechnology and genetics with more than 20 years of experience. He is currently a group leader in the department of microbiological research at MATIS, in the division of Food safety, Environment and Genetics.He was the biotechnology representative of the microbial node within the EU Network of Excellence "Marine Genomics Europe". He is involved in the CAREX (Life in extreme environments) and Micro B3 EU projects. The focus of his group is on microbial ecology, function and biotechnology in marine and various extreme environments (deep sea and coastal hydrothermal vents, terrestrial and subterranean vents and sub glacial lakes) as source of novel genes by silico screening. His group collaborates with international research groups and participated in numerous research projects, oceanic cruises and field trips.
Eyjlfur Reynisson Dr. Eyjólfur Reynisson obtained a PhD in microbiology from University of Iceland in 2010. His background includes microbial ecology in environment or food products and development of microbial cultivation and detections. He has 10 years of experience in the research field.
