Ribocon GmbH (RIBO)

22 riboRibocon is a professional bioinformatics services and solutions provider for microbiology, serving Academia and Industry worldwide. The company was founded in 2005 as a completely independent spin-off of the Microbial Genomics Group at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology and is located in the city of Bremen, about 60 km off the German North Sea coast. Ribocon mainly acts in the fields of Environmental Microbiology and Industrial Biotechnology with key techniques spanning (meta) genome data analysis, software and database development/maintenance, and (rRNA gene-based) identification/classification of microorganisms. Ribocon is routinely processing large-scale

DNA sequence datasets from next generation sequencing techniques and is regularly involved in (academic) research projects, ensuring continuous experience with the latest technology of the fast-evolving field. Ribocon is also one of the maintainer of the SILVA Project (www.arb-silva.de), the current European ribosomal RNA database, thus also well experienced with complex data structures and large-scale infrastructures.

Role of RIBO in MaCuMBA:

Ribocon will contribute to wp6 by processing, analysis and mining of metagenomic and genomic (reference isolates) datasets as well as rRNA gene datasets for the pre-characterization of the environmental communities.

Profile of staff engaged in the project:

  • Dr. Jörg Peplies is co-founder, CEO, and technical head of Ribocon with a strong 12-year background in molecular environmental microbiology (PhD in 2003) and a technological focus on microbial (meta) genomics and especially marker gene (rRNA) analysis for the identification and phylogeny of microorganisms. He is heading the company on a full-time level since 2006 and has continuously published in peer-reviewed journals, documenting the close involvement of Ribocon into research-related activities. He is also part of the management team of the SILVA rRNA gene database project.
  • Dr. Michael Richter is bioinformatics project manager at Ribocon since 2010 and has a strong background in microbial genomics and metagenomics as well as the development of corresponding software solutions (PhD in 2008). His work is documented by a number of peer-reviewed publications, including high-ranking journals, and public web portals for the dissemination and documentation of the free software tools he is in charge of (e.g. www.jcoast.net). As yet he has supervised about two dozens of genome and metagenome projects and he is highly experienced with user support and training.
