WP2: Innovative approaches for isolating and culturing the uncultured

Type of activity: RTD
WP2 Lead partner: Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA)
WP2 Lead contact person: Gerard Muyzer
Contact details of coordinator: g.muijzer@uva.nl

Objectives: To develop and apply a range of different (high-throughput) approaches for enriching and isolation of hitherto uncultured microorganisms with expected biotechnological potential. Innovative techniques to be evaluated in this WP include the dilution-to-extinction method, micro-encapsulation, highly compartmentalized and miniaturized cultivation methods, application of strongly diluted media, combinatorial cultivation and chemotaxis enrichment techniques, systems mimicking the natural environment, application of new substrates, syntrophy, mixed cultures for greater stability, smart use of cell-to-cell communication and use of innovative engineering solutions, e.g., sensors/imaging, micromanipulation optical tweezers, and electrokinetic approaches, such as microfluidics will also be explored.
